How Does Communication Work Before?

As time goes by, we cannot ignore the fact that gadgets play a big part in our lives. The moment we wake up, the first thing we’ll check is our phone. In making a thesis, it is important for the students to at least have one member who owns a laptop. If we want to be entertained or updated, we just have to open our television or our cellphones. It seems like in every thing we do, it is impossible for us not to use any gadgets.

Before you continue reading this blog post, ask yourself this one question first, “What’s it like if gadgets were not invented at all?”

In our MIL subject, we were given a task to interview an elderly in our community about the way of communication during their time. Because of this task, we were given a chance to talk to Mrs. Lilia Alejandro, a 79 years old strong woman. (full interview here) She told us that they used to write letters to communicate with their relatives who lives in the province. And if it is a matter of emergency, they used telegraph to send telegram. According to reference.com, telegram is a message sent through electrical signals fed through a wire.

Way back then, laptops and cellphones does not exist yet. So, we asked her if she ever tried using a laptop or a cellphone now. She said that she have not tried using a cellphone nor a laptop because she does not know how to use one. During Mrs. Lilia’s time, they received news through radios since there were no televisions back then. We asked her what were the other gadgets back then aside from radio. She answered that they used to use typewriters back then. We also asked her how did they recieved news way back Martial Law period. She said that it was through television. But according to her, every news are audited.

Since gadgets play a big part in our lives now, we asked her if there’s a huge difference between they way they communicate before and the way we communicate now. She answered yes and it’s because of the evolution and invention of different gadgets. For our last question, we asked her if gadgets has good effects to children. She answered yes. As long as children do not overuse it, it’s fine. Our interview with her is quite short but meaningful. With a short period of time, we at least learned something from her. Truly, without gadgets/technologies, everything will be hard. Not hard in a way we can’t handle it, but hard in way we are not used to it.
