3 Reasons why you should study in MCU (Manila Central University)

“He who opens a school door, closes a prison”

Victor Hugo

Manila Central University was first founded in 1904. It was formerly known as Escuela de Farmacia del Liceo de Manila. It’s the first Pharmacy school run by Filipinos, and the first Nursing school that offered 4-year Bachelor of Science in Nursing program in the Philippines. It is situated in EDSA, Metro Manila.

As a student who’s been studying at MCU for almost 2 years now, I can proudly say that I made the right choice to transfer here for senior high. A lot of people think that this school is only for those who want to pursue med-related courses in the future. But, it’s not. MCU is not just a school for future doctors. I see this university as a doctor that cures ignorance.

Today, I want to share to you what are the 3 reasons why you should choose MCU to pursue your dreams. School is such an important building block that we need for us to be able to build our dreams with strong foundation.

Facilities

When choosing a school, facilities are big factor. We must see and make sure that the school we’re going to attend have an excellent facility. Most people say that school facilities affect health, behavior, learning, and growth in achievement of the students.

In my experience here in the university campus, I can proudly say that I am always satisfied with the facilities. All the miscellaneous am paying is worth the price.

Let me now share to you my 3 best facilities.

First of the list are the academic buildings. The fact that most of the building here in MCU existed even before I came to this world, amazes me. It preserves the rich history of the university. Also, it accommodates all the students with comfort.

Secondly, I appreciate the laboratories here the most. The laboratories are complete with the materials. If you are going to need the laboratory for your class, they will let you use it and all the material/tools you’ll need. Also, you can really see that the laboratories are safe from danger.

Last but not the least, the swimming pool area. This is something that not every school have. The swimming area is large enough to accommodate more than 1 class. It has shower room and benches. This is great because it lets the students experience swimming lesson in their Physical Education class. These facilities provided me great learning comfort. As a kid, we were always told that school is our second home, and I never believed it. But today, MCU proved to me that it really is.

Quality of Education

Quality of education and teaching is what matter most. This will determine how much capable a school is to teach students no matter what their IQs are.

MCU have great teachers. In my few years here in MCU, I have met a lot of teachers that don’t just teach students what’s in the book. They go further than that. They share their knowledge, experience and wisdom to each one of us who’s willing. They taught us to open our minds because, in reality, school is just a small mountain we need to climb in order to reach the bigger one.

MCU lets the students learn and express themselves in their own ways. Yes, MCU is quite strict when it comes to some things. When I say some things, I meant uniforms, piercings, hair colors, late, and many more. But those are just the normal restrictions a school must implement for their students to learn discipline. They have clubs/organizations that lets the students do their hobbies and interests. This kind of thing helps build a good character. It helps the students discover what are their other capabilities. MCU is always making sure to improve their quality of education. We are living in a fast-paced world. There are things that we need to change in order to cope up. MCU was established more than a hundred year ago. There’s no doubt why they still exist, because as I’ve said, they always make sure to make improvements and changes over the time. They do researches and ventures on how to improve the university. They don’t just stay and get stuck in one place; they are always moving forward. Moving toward the excellence of life with their rich history, together with their students and staffs.

MCU acknowledges Diversity

MCU has a lot of foreigner students. They do not discriminate or neglect students with backgrounds, race, and nationality that are not the same with them. They acknowledge their difference and teach all of them equally. Truth be told, no student shall be left behind. No matter what you are or where you came from, we all have the right to get the education we need and deserve.

Teachers, staffs, and students respects each other. This helps create a safe and good environment for learning. We all have different languages, but we must learn how to speak one as we grow and succeed as one.

There are thousands of schools to choose from. It’s not about how expensive or cheap it is, nor about how famous the school is. Pick the one that provides you comfort, makes you feel safe and respected, and most especially, pick the school that will help you build your dreams. Learning isn’t just about growing alone; it’s about growing together to make better results and changes in the future. I made the right choice studying here in Manila Central University, I hope you make the right one too. Together, let’s keep moving towards excellence.

BLOG TO VLOG

As a teenager who loves watching vlogs, I can say that it’s really fun to do so.But how about making it? Have you ever thought how challenging can it be to make a vlog that has a meaningful content, and at the same time, a vlog everyone will like? Well, during our MIL subject, I have learned that vloggers can influenced us a lot. They are today’s influencers, and yet, some vlogs have senseless contents. Kids, teenagers, and even oldies have access to YouTube. As long as you have internet, you are free to acceses different kind of vlogs in YouTube. But what if a kid accidentally watched a vlogger cursing?Or a vlogger who’s putting a 100 layers of glue in her face? You can say that it was just for fun, but that kid might do the same thing.

And so, we were assigned to make a vlog that will show what should vloggers avoid to do to make their content more meaningful. We knew it will be challenging. Nothing comes easy, right? But looking at the bright side made us realize that it will be fun. We just have to do what were told to, and at the same enjoy the time together with our classmates.

We did shoot for just 4 hours. After the orientation, we proceed to making our vlog. It was tiring because we had to do a brainstorm at that very moment. We were even kicked out of the library because the librarian said that group meetings are not allowed. Also, we did a lot of walking. It was hot, and we were all exhausted. But we knew we had to finish it today. So, we worked hard, and finished all the scenes before the sun can even set. We all felt relieved. Editing was just easy because he have a groupmate who’s expert at it.

I must say that all of our hardwork was all worth it.

You can try watching it (click here).Leave a comment below if you like it or not. From blog, to vlog.

NO TO INTERNAT CAFES NEAR SCHOOLS

Internet cafes have always been an issue for school institutions. Having internet shops near school premises can be very distracting to most students-especially male ones because they are more likely to play computer games than their counterpart. Though having computer shops near schools may be helpful too, in terms of printing assignments and doing rushed academic work, we as students, strongly disagree on having internet cafes near school for we think that it provides more distraction rather than help in doing school works. Students should also be prohibited from going to internet cafes especially during class hours.

In our opinion, the government should be the ones in charge of implementing policies about internet cafes. As we all know, the government has the authority to govern a country or a state and we are all obliged to follow the rules and laws that they implement. All internet cafe owners should help the government on these because they also have the right in ruling it. If these internet cafes don’t have rules to follow, students will just disregard those violations that can cause negative effects to them. In this way, it won’t be disregarded because it is mandated by the government. There will be some consequences if all of these are disobeyed.

Many internet cafes are built near schools which is not a good idea since a lot students might precede there instead of going to school. Internet cafe owners who will follow the rules that we implement shall be rewarded accordingly. They will receive a certificate and 10 thousand pesos every year as an award for obeying the rules.

There will be some internet cafes that will surely not follow the policies we made because of their greed for money. Some will still accept students even though they are already aware that doing such thing is not allowed. To avoid these happenings, we suggest that internet cafes who will not abide by the law shall receive punishment. There will be three (3) corresponding punishments; (1) for being caught for the first time, the owner of the internet cafe shall pay a fine of 10,000 pesos; (2) for the second time, they shall pay another fine of 50,000 pesos; (3) If caught for the third time, their permit will be suspended and all of their equipment will get confiscated. Said punishments will make our policies more effective.

We also think that these internet cafes that built near schools needs to be monitored. Internet cafes cannot be easily removed in the system of many people, especially students. It needs to be monitored so that we can prevent students from cutting classes for the sake of wasting time at these internet cafes. Not prevent them totally, well, in some way. Prevent them only during their class hours.
To sum this all up, we strongly believe against allowing internet cafés near schools, for it does more harm than good, at least from what we have observed. It can break the line of concentration in students by providing easily accessible distractions. Internet cafés must be regularly monitored and given proper rewards and punishments, all according to their management and obedience of the policies. While these cafes do help in some occasions, we believe that this does not outweigh the possibility of the students getting tempted to go to said cafés and wasting time there instead of being productive. Internet cafes should not be gotten rid of completely, but rather monitored more effectively. Said cafes should also be a good distance from schools, so as to be sure that students shall not head there instead of going directly to school.

How Does Communication Work Before?

As time goes by, we cannot ignore the fact that gadgets play a big part in our lives. The moment we wake up, the first thing we’ll check is our phone. In making a thesis, it is important for the students to at least have one member who owns a laptop. If we want to be entertained or updated, we just have to open our television or our cellphones. It seems like in every thing we do, it is impossible for us not to use any gadgets.

Before you continue reading this blog post, ask yourself this one question first, “What’s it like if gadgets were not invented at all?”

In our MIL subject, we were given a task to interview an elderly in our community about the way of communication during their time. Because of this task, we were given a chance to talk to Mrs. Lilia Alejandro, a 79 years old strong woman. (full interview here) She told us that they used to write letters to communicate with their relatives who lives in the province. And if it is a matter of emergency, they used telegraph to send telegram. According to reference.com, telegram is a message sent through electrical signals fed through a wire.

Way back then, laptops and cellphones does not exist yet. So, we asked her if she ever tried using a laptop or a cellphone now. She said that she have not tried using a cellphone nor a laptop because she does not know how to use one. During Mrs. Lilia’s time, they received news through radios since there were no televisions back then. We asked her what were the other gadgets back then aside from radio. She answered that they used to use typewriters back then. We also asked her how did they recieved news way back Martial Law period. She said that it was through television. But according to her, every news are audited.

Since gadgets play a big part in our lives now, we asked her if there’s a huge difference between they way they communicate before and the way we communicate now. She answered yes and it’s because of the evolution and invention of different gadgets. For our last question, we asked her if gadgets has good effects to children. She answered yes. As long as children do not overuse it, it’s fine. Our interview with her is quite short but meaningful. With a short period of time, we at least learned something from her. Truly, without gadgets/technologies, everything will be hard. Not hard in a way we can’t handle it, but hard in way we are not used to it.

History Check ✔

STOP! Before you continue reading the rest of my blog post, ask yourself this one import question first. ‘Are you an information literate?’. If your answer is yes, then congrats! You are not of those people who can be easily fooled by fake news. But if your answer is no, don’t be sad nor proud. It’s not too late to change. From now on, you must promise yourself not to believe anything you read on the internet unless you have check it thoroughly. Yes, it takes time, but as a HUMSS student, I must say that we should free ourselves from the non-stop fake news scattered all over the internet. Being information literate is not just about knowing what is true and wat is not, but also knowing how to properly use all the information we can find.

One good practice is figuring out whether everything in Aquino-Cojuangco| FACTS THEY DON’T WANT YOU TO KNOW video is true or just a fake news. The said video was uploaded on YouTube in year 2011. If you haven’t watched the video, try watching it. If yes, tell me how convinced you were while watching. Sharing my own experience, it was during our discussion when our teacher made us watched a 15-minute video. I was very convinced at that moment, and if I did not do any research, I might have shared and believed the wrong info by this time. To start off, let us discuss the undying story of Cojuangco-Luna affair. There was this rumor saying that Ysidra Cojuangco was Gen. Antonio Luna’s girlfriend. At that time, Gen. Luna was in-charged for providing security for the convoys who was carrying the millions of worth revolutionary treasures. Before Gen. Luna died it was said that he transported it from Ilocos Treasury & Government of Pampanga to Paniqui, Tarlac. After Luna’s assassination, the revolutionary treasure suddenly disappeared. Nobody can find it, even the Americans. Most of the people believed the gossip saying that Gen. Luna gave it to Ysidra Cojuangco. At first, I was astonished. I found the story great. It’s like one of those stories you can read in novels. Nevertheless, no matter how much amazing the story was, there are no proofs to prove that it happened. I have read tons of articles. Few says it was true, and few says it was nothing but a rumor. I am puzzled, but as an information literate, I must know how to analyze those articles carefully. There was this article that convinced me that the Cojuangco-Luna affair is nothing but a myth. Ambeth Ocampo. Does this name ring a bell? Ambeth Ocampo is a Filipino historian, professor, award-winning columnist, and book author. He said that Aguinaldo government was very meticulous in recording revolutionary funds. And if the money was really given to Ysidra Cojuangco, why aren’t there any document to support it? As Ambeth Ocampo said: “History is based on written records, not gossip or hearsay. As the late Teodoro Agoncillo used to say: “No document, no history!”.

Another big issue included in Baron Buchokoy’s video is the Hacienda Luisita. As we all know, the issue of Hacienda Luisita came before generation Z babies were even born. For us to know whether the information on the video are all true, let us tackle how did the Cojuangco became the owner of Hacienda Luisita. Spanish owners of Tabacalera wanted to sell Azucarera in Tarlac. Even though the Lopez clan wanted to buy it, late President Ramon Magsaysay offered it to Jose Cojuangco Jr., late President Cory Aquino’s father. The Philippine government agreed to loan them dollars to purchase Azucarera. Inline with that, they must follow the 2 (two) conditions: (1) Along with Azucarera, they must purchase the Hacienda Luisita too. (2) After 10 years, 6,400 hectares must be given to its small farmers. 10 (ten) years after the purchase, no land was distributed. Farmers formed groups and continued asking for land distribution. Marcos government asked for follow-ups, but still, no land was distributed. Even after Marcos filed case against Cojuangco, no land was distributed. Years have passed, and when Cory Aquino became the president, the case was dismissed by the Court of Appeals since the Department of Agrarian Reform and the GSIS, including the Central Bank, did not object to the motion to dismiss the case. The story of Hacienda Luisita does not just end there. Mendiola and Luisita Massacre were one of the results of the never-ending issue of Hacienda Luisita. It was sad and tragic, but it all goes down on Philippine history now. Moving on, let us now proceed to Cory’s new land reform. The said new land reform exempted Hacienda Luisita from being distributed to the farmers. (Read here to learn more about the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Law or Republic Act no. 6657.)

According to the video, the 1987 constitution is very flawed. They also stated that it was made by and made for the oligarchs. I have read an article from rappler saying that the 1987 constitution is flawed and there’s a need for it to be revised. Nevertheless, the author stated there that now isn’t the right time to change it. Another article from Manila Bulletin says that the 1987 Constitution is flawed and fragmentary. If the 1987 Constitution is flawed and badly needs revision, why are there no actions regarding this? Is it because it is favorable for the oligarchs? Or is it simply because we still have no solution for this problem? No matter what the answer is, it is evident that the 1987 Constitution has its flaws.

Another information seen on Baron Buchokoy’s video is the SCTEX (Subic-Clark-Tarlac Expressway). Number 1 (one) issue on SCTEX is that the farmers were not given their 33% share in the P83 million the government paid the Hacienda Luisita, Inc for road right-of-way to build the Luisita interchange. Farmers were gives 3% of the payment, while the other remaining 30% was used to pay Hacienda Luisita, Inc.’s (HLI) debt. Second (2) issue was that the government assumed the cost of building the P170-million Luisita interchange for the Cojuangcos’ privately owned industrial park inside Hacienda Luisita.Usually, owners of private properties pays the government to have exits from the highway. Third (3) issue was that the payment of P83 million or right-of-way was overpriced. P83 million for 83 hectares means P100 per square meter according to Remulla. Remulla said, that time, price of farmland in Tarlac ranges only from P6 to P8 per square meter.

After doing some research, I therefore conclude that not everything in Baron Buchokoy’s video is true. Yes, half of the video’s content is correct, but still, there’s this one information that cannot be considered as true because it lacks evidence. And that is the Cojuangco’s wealth is from the revolutionary funds of the Philippines. Until no document will support this idea, or gossip, this story will always remain as a myth.

Being information literate is one of the characteristics everybody should have. As my teacher told us, from the moment we wake up, to the moment before we sleep, we continuously receive information. We are fed with too much info and that doesn’t mean we are going to believe it all. We must carefully analyze the information we are receiving, and we must learn how to properly use it. In social media platforms, especially in Facebook, fake news will always be present. People who makes fake news will try to catch your attention by using overacting titles, and so, you must first read the whole content before reacting or sharing it. Being information literate is not worthless. Trying to analyze whether that information is true or not is not boring. Avoiding ignorance is not senseless thing to do at all. Remember that everything starts with you. If you will start preventing fake news to circulate, soon, everybody will do the same too. Let us be wiser, so no fool will ever try to fool us.

The Evolution of Media

Media has been part of our lives. Even before we were born, it has been there, making life much easier. Have you heard Telegraph? It’s a tool back then used for communicating. Looking at it now, it seems very inconvenient and very much tiring to use. But before, that little tiresome tool, made other’s life much easier. As a student, knowing how media evolved through time is very much important. It will make us understand the media itself, and how much big the media’s progress is. Aside from that, we should be thankful for those people who developed different types of media. If it wasn’t for them, we may not be experiencing the benefits of the media.

THE APP OF THE FUTURE

Looking around made me realize that phone is one of the most important things a student should have. At school, students used phones to make notes/reminders, to take pictures, to play games, to create presentations (documents, slideshow, video, etc.), to kill time when they have nothing to do, and most especially, to communicate with everybody they know and with everybody who is part of the online community.

Me, as a student, realized that if phone is that much important to everyone, then why not have an app that will maximize student’s time. 10 years from now, I can see that phone’s importance in student’s life will increase. And by that time, there will be a lot of worthy and un-worthy apps in google play store and app store. But what kind of app can maximize student’s time? You may be thinking what app we still need when we already have Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, Youtube, Pinterest, Edmodo, Google Classroom, Mobile Legends, Clash of Clans, and a lot more.

Here, I introduced you the app of the future, or which I called, U. But what makes U different from all the other apps we currently have? Instead of showing-off or sharing your lifestyle in social media, U will help you showcase your talents, and your interests with people who have the same interests as you. So, what kind of an app is U? How does U work? Is it free? Well, to start off, U is a very simple app. To picture it well, I will tell you how does U work step by step.

After downloading the app U, you will choose whether to log in (if you already have an existing account), or to sign up (if still don’t have an account). After clicking ‘sign up’, you must fill up the box with your name and active email address. Next to that is creating a password for your account. After doing these 2 basic steps, you must now confirm your account through your provided email address. Once you have done that, you may now set up your profile. Your profile must contain your name, your username, your contact number, your hometown, and a little description about yourself. After completing your profile, you may now proceed in choosing the topics you want to see in your feed. In U, you will not follow people, but instead, you will follow the topics that interests you. That way, users will not be discouraged for having low number of followers. Also, every day, instead of seeing the same person posting different things, you will be able to see different person posting random stuffs about the same topic that interests all of you. If you completely succeed in making your own account, you may start browsing or creating your own post.

You can post anything in U, you must just choose where topic it belongs before posting it. But wait, it doesn’t end there. U also allows you to rate the posts you see. If you are going to rate it 2-3, you must add a comment why you rate it low and how can the U user improve it. On the other hand, if you are going to rate it 4-5, you must still include why do you think his/her post is good. Instead of letting everybody see what others think of your work, only you will be able to see it. The ratings and suggestion will directly go to the CS email box. That way, other’s judgement will be free from the influence of others.  U app can also be used to send messages to different people who also uses the app. That way, you can also make friends with anyone, anywhere. U is an app where you can post your interests, hobbies, and talents not to brag what you can do or what you have, but to communicate with other netizens out there with a style.

I do believe that having this kind of app will help students maximize their time, because U is not just an app where you can post stuffs, but it is also an app that will help you communicate with everyone around the world by sharing the things you love doing the most. U will help you improve the things you do, build your confidence, and most especially, communicate with everybody with a bit of style. The U app still a have a lot of features that will surely catch your heart and blow your mind away. This is just the start. 10 years from now, I can see everybody enjoying this new amazing. Always remember, everything starts with U.

Another bonus, are you one of those people who hates seeing senseless ads? Well, good news, U will only show you ads that are related to your chosen topics.
